Nearby
West Bay features a marina with houseboats and docking
facilities, and is the starting point for the famous West Bay
Walkway (also known as Westsong Walkway), a pedestrian-only
boardwalk to downtown: fabulous, and a 'must-do' for visitors to
Victoria. When you stay with any one of The Esquimalt
B&B's, you'll be near terrific walking trails such as this one.
Or enjoy the Harbour Ferry Water taxi service every 15 minutes
from West Bay to downtown or every 30 minutes from the Gorge
waterway to downtown. The captains of these little vessels have
a wealth of information about Victoria Harbour and area to share
with visitors. |
There are many wonderful
restaurant choices in Esquimalt, and here we mention a
few: Located conveniently in the heart of the West Bay Marina is
The Princess Mary. While dining, enjoy the ambience of
sailboats and houseboats in this marvelous location. Where the
Olde England Inn and Anne Hathaway's Cottage made it's home for
over half a century, you will now find the home of the Rosemeade
Dining Room. New owners, stunningly beautiful decor and an
awesome view of nearly 5 acres of gardens is just the backdrop
for the food - awarded the honour of 2nd place in "Best New
Restaurants in Canada in 2005, by Enroute Magazine. Esquimalt is
an area of tremendous historic significance in Victoria, so it
is here that we mention the Tudor House Pub, as the building is
from 1904, and was originally known as the Sailor and Soldier's
Home. The cold beer and wine store was added in time for the
building's 100th birthday.Other restaurants include The Paisley,
for traditional family dining, Zap Thai, The Blue Nile, and many
more. Beans and Greens is a great spot for good coffee,
interesting plants, and pottery and artwork for sale.
Along every curve is a new
scene; sometimes an otter playing on its back in the water, using
its tummy as a table for some morsel, and sometimes a heron will be
using its slow stalking technique in zen- like fashion. Stunning
vistas from the pathway meld with sights of a busy port: See US
ferries docking within minutes of downtown, the exciting take-off
and landing of float planes, and cruise ships dwarfing the buildings
around them as they moor by the outer harbour. Along this boardwalk,
strollers pass under stretching Arbutus trees, their red, peeling
bark exposing an inner green smoothness. Though the Swallow's
Landing development took place at the top of a hill, The Matson
Lands, the only Garry Oak Preserve left on Victoria's Inner Harbour
was
preserved and is yours to enjoy. From the boardwalk, take the
meandering stairs up through the Garry Oaks, and enjoy the
view of the harbour, and the hill, with its wildflowers, and rich
native habitat. Views of the Inner harbour include whale-watching
boats, helicopters and sea-planes.

The
word, Esquimalt,
comes from the First Nation's language, Es Whoy Malth, which
means 'place of shoaling waters'. Esquimalt was one of the
first areas of Victoria to be settled, and so has a rich history. |
Fleming
Beach is famous for its bouldering (rock-climber's) cliffs,
sport fishing, kayakers, and is often the site of tasar yacht races.
The path from the main beach leads to historic Macaulay Point, where
the gun magazines and tunnels from the late 1800's are still in
place. Again, across the water, unrivalled views of the Olympic
Mountains of our Washington State neighbours to the south can be
enjoyed. Esquimalt is home to Canada's largest naval fleet, at
CFB Esquimalt, otherwise known as HMCS Naden. Free guided bus tours
are offered here, and the
Naval and Military Museum is bursting with fascinating
information. While you're at it, don't miss HMC Dockyard, one of the
reasons that B.C. entered Confederation! This entire Pacific
Operation, known as Marpac, comprises 10,300 acres!
You
can see that sports and recreation are big here. Esquimalt
is
proud to be a very outdoor sport and recreation-minded community.
The
newly renovated Esquimalt Recreation Centre offers the best weight-
training equipment in all of Victoria, as well as the warmest pool.
Many activities are available to children, young adults, and
seniors.
The Esquimalt Sports Centre, known as the Archie Browning Sports
Centre, offers hockey and curling facilities. When the ice is out,
it
is home to some very large conferences and festivals. If you are
participating in a conference or event at the Centre, you will find
that any of the Esquimalt Bed and Breakfast locations will give you
the most convenient access to the Archie Browning Sports Centre. The
same can be said of those who will enjoy events at Bullen Park,
which is right next door to the Esquimalt's Arena. Why take a
shuttle bus to another location when you can walk to your B and B in
just minutes?! Enjoy all the amenities of friendly Esquimalt: your
conference, the Country Grocer, the bank, Pharmasave Drugstore, and
your accommodation are all in one location.
The Archie Browning Sports Centre is home to three groups: Esquimalt
Curling Club * Victoria Cougars Jr. B Hockey Club * Victoria Skating
Club. If you are attending a curling bonspiel, hockey tournament, or
a figure skating competition, don't hesitate to call any of our
accommodation choices to find the one that suits your style! Sailing
races occur via the Canadian Forces Sailing Club, which operates off
Maplebank Road. The 2003 Tasar Yacht World Championships was also
hosted here. Participation in regattas can be arranged with
pre-registration.
Every June, Victoria is proud to host the Tall Ships Festival. Come
and view the incredible collection of boats from around the world,
and watch them sail right from our seaside.
Over
on the Gorge Waterway, a calmer, narrower body of water, see
canoers, kayakers, and rowing teams practicing daily. Or, take
lessons from the Gorge Rowing Club, and become one of the fittest
people on the water! Most teams are practicing for the most exciting
event on Victoria's inner harbour, Dragon Boat Festival, which is
held in August of each year.
You'll find any number of people cycling, roller-blading and walking
on the Galloping Goose Trail or on any of our quiet streets and
stretches of oceanfront.
Much has been listed that is local to our seaside neighborhood. You
can be assured that if you are visiting sites such as the Royal B.C.
Museum, Butchart Gardens or Butterfly Gardens, your hosts will be
happy to share their knowledge of Victoria's attractions and events.
The community of
Esquimalt is also home to many outstanding artisans. Some of our
member B and B's display paintings and works of art from both
Esquimalt and Greater Victoria artists.
If you are visiting a
family or friend in the neighborhood of Esquimalt, don't forget to
ask for low-season, or long-stay rates.
All of Esquimalt Bed and Breakfasts look
forward to serving you soon.
